Maheshwari Chauhan wins women's skeet gold

The Asian Championship bronze medallist, Maheshwari tied with Ganemat Sekhon with 50 in the final before thr shoot-out, while pushing Parinaaz Dhaliwal to the bronze.

Maheshwari Chauhan beat Ganemat Sekhon in the shoot-off for the gold in women's skeet in the 61st National shotgun championship at the Dr. Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad, on Friday.

The Asian Championship bronze medallist, Maheshwari tied with Ganemat Sekhon with 50 in the final, while pushing Parinaaz Dhaliwal to the bronze. Jasmeen Kaur, Darshna Rathore and former national champion Saniya Sheikh placed fourth to sixth in that order.

The defending champion, Rashmmi Rathore could muster only 62 in qualification. Even though she shot better in the second and third rounds with 21 and 22, her first round of 19 pulled her out of the final by two points.

In fact, Areeba Khan with 64, missed the final in the shoot-off, along with Kartiki Singh Shaktawat, while Jasmeen Kaur won the shoot-off to grab the sixth spot.

Another former champion Arti Singh Rao missed the final by one point, as she also had to endure a bad first round in a series of 18, 23 and 22.

Areeba Khan did very well to jump out of the disappointment of the women’s event, to clinch the junior gold, pushing Ganemat to her second silver of the day with a 54-50 victory. Darshna Rathore won the bronze ahead of Agees Chhina, Kartiki Shaktawat and Parinaaz Dhaliwal.

Meanwhile, in men’s skeet Angad Vir Singh Bajwa led with 74 out of 75, following rounds of 25, 24 and 25. He was one point clear of Olympian Mairaj Ahmad Khan and former Asian champion Man Singh, with two more rounds to go before the final on Saturday.

Arozepal Sandhu followed on 72, while Jitender Beniwal, Karanvir Singh Sekhon, Kuldeep Sanyashi, Amrinder Singh Cheema, Ashar Hasan Lateef and Ayush Rudraraju were on 71.

Other good shooters like Smit Singh, Anantjeet Singh Naruka, Parampal Singh Guron and Sheeraz Sheikh were lurking round the corner on 70.

Parul Kumar tops

Parul Kumar topped the men’s rifle 3-position event ahead of seasoned stalwarts in the shooting National selection trials at the same venue on Friday.

Parul shot 459.3 in the final to beat Kapil Rana by 3.3 points for the top spot. Olympian Chain Singh took the third place ahead of Olympian Sanjeev Rajput who had topped qualification with 1172, Swapnil Kusale, Mahesh Kumar, Akhil Sheoran and Shubham Malik placed fourth to eighth
in that order.

In centre fire pistol, Rajat Kumar Yadav pushed Samaresh Jung to the second place by one point with a score of 583.
