ISSF World Cup: Manu, Heena fail to make the final

Former World junior champion and Youth Olympics finalist Yashaswini Singh Deswal shot 577 and also missed the women’s air pistol final by one point.

Former World junior champion and Youth Olympics finalist Yashaswini Singh Deswal shot 577 and missed the women’s air pistol final by one point in the shooting World Cup in Beijing on Wednesday.

Yashaswini had an impressive run with scores of 98, 98, 97, 98 and 95 before she lost the race in the last round with a score of 91.

In fact, the last round proved the nemesis for the Youth Olympics champion Manu Bhaker, who shot 575 and was placed 17th. She had 92 in the last round, after a run of 96, 98, 97, 97 and 95.

Two-time Olympian Heena Sidhu had more trouble to tackle as she had scores of 93 and 92 in the second and sixth rounds. Heena shot 572 for the 26th spot.

While, World and Olympic champion Anna Korakaki of Greece topped qualification with 585, Kim Minjung of Korea won the gold with a superlative performance as she beat Vitalina Batsarashkina of Russia by 4.4 points. Veronika Major of Hungary won the bronze ahead of Anna Korakaki.

Nino Salukvadze of Georgia and Anudari Tsolmonbaatar of Mongolia who had shot 578 in qualification and placed fifth and sixth respectively walked away with the Olympic quota places.

In men’s 50-metre rifle 3-position event, Filip Nepejchal of the Czech Republic won with a junior world record score of 458.7, as he beat World champion and Olympic silver medallist Sergey Kamenskiy of Russia by 0.6 point. The Czech won the Olympic quota place along with the bronze medallist Zhao Zhonghao of China.

The Indian shooters were off target in this event. Olympian Chain Singh shot 1165 and missed the final by seven points. Parul Kumar shot 1164 for the 33rd place.

Olympian Sanjeev Rajput had a hard time, as he scored 359 out of 400 in standing, after rounds of 388 in kneeling and 398 in prone. A total of 1145 placed Sanjeev 58th.

Sanjeev had shot 1171 in the elimination round the previous day.
