National selection trial: Ravi Kumar clinches top spot

Ravi Kumar continued to excel as he took his score to another career-best mark and clinched the first place with a 1.8 point margin over fellow trainee Akhil Sheoran, in men’s air rifle in the sixth shooting National selection trial at the Dr. Karni Singh range, Tughlakabad, on Thursday.

Ravi shot a qualification score of 631.7, better than his 631.0 on Wednesday, and a slender margin of victory over Swapnil Kusale. Another shooter who has been having a good season internationally, Deepak Kumar, placed third ahead of Arjun Babuta, Satyendra Singh, Kiran Jadhav, Parveen Kumar and Aribam Sharma.

  • 10m Air Rifle: 1. Ravi Kumar 250.3 (631.7); 2. Akhil Sheoran 248.5 (623.1); 3. Deepak Kumar 227.6 (623.0).
  • 50m Free Pistol: 1. Achal Pratap Grewal 232.4 (555); 2. Monu Tomar 229.9 (551); 3. Omprakash Mitharwal 208.0 (548).
  • Women:
  • 25m Sports Pistol: 1. Rahi Sarnobat 39 (578); 2. Heena Sidhu 32 (573); 3. Sanjana Sehrawat 27 (576).

In women’s sports pistol, Rahi Sarnobat continued her domination for the second day running, as she topped with 39 points, comfortably beating fellow Olympian Heena Sidhu by seven points. The qualification scores were nothing to crow about and that should be a cause for concern.

Sanjana Sehrawat took the third place, ahead of Olympian Annu Raj Singh, Arunima Gaur, Anisa Sayyed, Surabhi Pathak and Neeraj Kaur.

In men’s free pistol, Achal Pratap Grewal topped ahead of Monu Tomar, after having placed third in the fifth trial. Amanpreet Singh topped with an impressive 561, but placed fifth behind Olympian Prakash Nanjappa. Arun, Gurpal Singh and Jai Singh placed sixth to eighth in that order.
