Olympian Sanjeev Rajput asserted his strength by beating Satyendra Singh by 1.8 point for the top slot in rifle 3-position event in the national shooting selection trials at the Dr. Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad, on Friday.

Except for 15 shots in kneeling position — when he trailed another Olympian Chain Singh — Sanjeev dominated the final as he kept a healthy lead throughout the 45-shot drill. A bunch of three 9s and two low 10s on the last five shots could not dent his lead much. While Singh placed third, qualification topper Swapnil Kusale (1165) placed fifth behind Surendra Singh Rathod, and ahead of Navdeep Singh Rathore, Kapil Rana and Akhil Sheoran (1162) who had shot the second best in qualification.

In centre fire pistol, it was Samaresh Jung who stood atop with a score of 585, with 294 in the precision stage and 291 in the rapid fire section.

Samaresh was followed by Pankaj Yadav and Omkar Singh, while Mahendar Singh missed the third place in the shoot-off.

They were followed by Pemba Tamang and Anhad Jawanda who shot 579, apart from Gurpreet Singh (576) and Harpreet Singh (575).

Olympic silver medallist and Asian Games medallist Vijay Kumar shot 571 for the 14th spot, while the young Anish Bhanwala could muster 570 for the 17th spot, a slot below the seasoned Ashok Pandit.

The results:

50m rifle 3-position: 1. Sanjeev Rajput 459.0 (1157); 2. Satyendra Singh 457.2 (1155); 3. Chain Singh 445.4 (1158).

25m centre fire pistol: 1. Samaresh Jung 585; 2. Pankaj Yadav 582; 3. Omkar Singh 580.
