Shooting Nationals: Gurpreet wins men’s 25m

Gurpreet Singh won the men’s 25-metre standard pistol gold with a score of 573 in the 59th National shooting championship at the Dr. Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad, on Thursday.

The rapid fire specialist who has won the Olympic quota place in air pistol, the 27-year-old Gurpreet had 195 in the 150-second series and 189 each in the 20-second and 10-second series.

Former national champion Mahaveer Singh won a three-way tie against Harpreet Singh and Yogesh Singh to clinch the silver two points behind Gurpreet.

Mahaveer and Harpreet shot 47 in the shoot-off while Yogesh lost out with a 46. In the subsequent shoot-off, Mahaveer pipped Harpreet, another rapid fire expert, 46-43, to take the silver.

The rapid fire pistol silver medallist, Neeraj Kumar was placed fifth, while Samaresh Jung (565), Ronak Pandit (563) and Omkar Singh (563) placed seventh, ninth and 11th respectively, among the other leading shooters in the event.

In the junior section, Achal Pratap Singh Grewal won the gold, two points ahead of Shivam Shukla.

In men’s air rifle, Chain Singh shot 623.8 to be in the lead ahead of Satyendra Singh (621.7), Milanpreet Singh (619.5), Sachin Ananda Chavan (619.0) and Rakesh Manpat (618.4). More shooters including Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang will shoot over the next two days before the final on Saturday.

In women’s 50-metre rifle 3-position event, Anjum Moudgil led with 581, following a series of 193 in kneeling, 196 in prone and 192 in standing. She was three points ahead of Meena Kumari and Elizabeth Susan Koshy. Tejaswini Muley (576), Tejaswini Sawant (575), N. Gaayathri (575), K. C. Hema (573), Anjali Bhagwat (573), Lajja Gauswami (571) followed in that order. More shooters will try to qualify for the final on Friday.

Men:25m standard pistol: 1. Gurpreet Singh 573; 2. Mahaveer Singh 571 (46, 47); 3. Harpreet Singh 571 (43, 47); 4. Yogesh Singh 571 (46).

Juniors: 1. Achal Pratap Singh Grewal 562; 2. Shivam Shukla 560; 3 Arjun Das 558.
