The 28-year-old Gurpreet had won the Olympic quota in air pistol despite specialising in rapid fire pistol. It is believed that he would be fielded in the Rio Olympics in air pistol ahead of better-ranked Prakash Nanjappa, so as to help him be a double starter in rapid fire pistol.

Jitu Rai, who won the free pistol gold and placed fifth in air pistol in the ongoing World Cup, will be the obvious choice to enter both the events in the Rio Games. A country can field a maximum of two shooters in an event in the Olympics, as against three in the World championship, World Cup and other international competitions.
