It’s time for Irfan Pathan to explore the world of cinema.

The India pacer is all set to make his debut on the big screen as he has been roped by director Ajay Gnanamuthu for his upcoming Tamil film which has Vikram in the lead.

Tentatively called ‘ Vikram 58’ , the film will see Irfan playing the role of a police officer. And the India international, who is now a commentator, is excited about the new assignment.

“When the director approached me, my first question was, ‘Why me?’. He explained that the role suited me perfectly and that they were keen on casting me,” Irfan told Sportstar on the sidelines of the second Test between India and South Africa in Pune.

“It took me a little time to make up my mind. And once I was convinced, I gave a go ahead. I have never acted in a film before, so yeah, it is a new challenge,” Irfan said.

This is Ajay Gnanamuthu’s third film after Demonte Colony and Imaikka Nodigal . Vikram, on the other hand, was recently seen in Rajesh M Selva’s Kadaram Kondan .

Irfan, who knows a bit of Tamil because of previous association with Chennai Super Kings, agrees that language won’t be an issue. “I am really excited… It won’t affect my other commitments either,” Irfan said, adding that he will have to shoot in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata and abroad. “That’s the plan as of now,” Irfan said.

When the makers of the film approached him, initially via social media, Irfan wasn’t sure about the possibilities. “But later, they came to Vadodara and we spoke at length. It looked interesting then,” the fast bowler said.

He, however, made it clear that is in a ‘one-off assignment’. “As of now, this is a one-off project, but let’s see what’s in store… I never thought of acting, but then it happened,” he said.

“The casting is amazing… I have been a big fan of Vikram, and I have seen most of his films. And another major reason behind accepting the project is to work with A.R. Rahman,” an excited Irfan said.

After spending years in the 22 yards, the 34-year-old is all set to start a new innings on a different wicket.
