The star, though, is keen on using his ever growing influence to highlight the need to act on certain social issues. On Thursday, he took to Instagram to encourage adoption of 21 beagles that are being released by a testing laboratory to >RESQ (Pune) for rehabilitation and re-homing.

His >Tweet in support of his girlfriend Anushka Sharma after continous online trolling was the most Retweeted Tweet of 2016. He encouraged his followers, who attributed his outstanding performance in the ICC World T20 to the couple's alleged break-up, to focus instead on empathy and women empowerment.

On international women's day (2016) the cricket-star slammed the men with negative outlook towards women by publishing >a photo on instagram with ‘SORRY’ written on it.

It is not often that an Indian sports icon uses the social media platform to encourage conversations on community building and his act of standing up for women and advocating a more positive online behaviour was well-appreciated by his followers. Drawing strength from his captain, pacer >Mohammed Shami recently hit back at people who had made offensive comments on a picture posted by the cricketer on his Facebook page.

More power to you, Virat!
