Charlotte Edwards... "I am really good at baking scones with jam and cream."

Often pausing to reminisce and think before answering, Charlotte Edwards said the questions posed to her were “hard”. She, however, revealed some secrets that even the England team’s support staff was unaware of.

Question: Someone you would go to when you are in doubt?

Clare Connor. She is a very close friend of mine. She is someone I turn to.

The opposition you loved playing against the most and hated the most?

I hated playing against Cathryn Fitzpatrick of Australia. There was good rivalry between us and she was, without doubt, the best bowler in women’s cricket.

I love playing against Suzie Bates of New Zealand. (We have a) Good banter. I have played with her quite a lot.

How do you unwind?

I think I will go and sit in my room and watch a box set. I will be watching Homeland now.

One thing that people don’t know about you?

I used to play the cornet in school. I used to play in a band. Yeah! I love singing.

(When this reporter reminds her about Suzie Bates and her carpool karaoke during the Women’s Big Bash League, Charlotte says, “We are really good singers. If you want to plug us to a singing duel, I am totally okay with that.”)

One cricket ground you like to play on?

(Trying hard to remember) There’s a ground in Queenstown (New Zealand), where the plane comes in, that’s the ground I would like to play at!

Sporting and cricketing idol?

In cricket, it is Steve Waugh. He is someone I have admired from an early age. Steffi Graf was my sporting idol when I was growing up.

Your favourite movie?

Taken

Your favourite song?

Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse of the Heart . I sing it really well.

Your favourite karaoke song?

Celine Dion’s Think Twice . I have only found that one, and I am really good at that.

Your favourite destination?

(Thinking hard, again) Where do I go (asking herself). Perth. I have played and spent a lot of time there.

Your biggest off the field accomplishment?

I don’t think I have time to do anything else (she exclaims).

(Team manager Beth Wild reminds her about tapping the ball on the bat more than 400 times during BBC’s Edge of Glory challenge.)

Yeah! I did! That’s a record for tapping a ball on the bat. I have beaten Joe Root (she sounds excited).

Your favourite book?

I don’t really read that much. Legacy by James Kerr.

Your secret talent?

I am really good at baking scones with jam and cream.

(Beth asks, “Are you actually?” and Charlotte replies, “Yeah, I am.”)

Your secret crush?

(Thinking again) David Beckham.

Prankster in the team from whom you would keep away?

Sarah Taylor
