Queries CornerIn the Manchester Test match, Joe Root scored 71 in the first innings, but was dismissed for a first-ball duck in the second. How often has this occurred to a batsman in Test matches? – V. George, Kottayam.

A1. There are several such instances. In fact, Root is the sixth English captain who has had the misfortune of making a 50-plus score and then being dismissed for a first-ball duck in the second innings. The other five are Archie MacLaren in 1888, Walter Hammond in 1938, Ray Illingworth in 1969, Mike Gatting in 1986 and Alastair Cook in 2013. Gatting is the only England captain to register a century and a first-ball duck in the same Test match.

How many Indians have managed to score a century and a fifty in the same Test match while batting at No. 6? – S. Rajan, Nagpur.

A2. Hanuma Vihari (111 and 53 not out) in the recent Kingston Test match became the fifth Indian batsman to do so, after Polly Umrigar (56 and 172 not out) at Kingston in 1961-62, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi (64 and 148) at Leeds in 1967, M. L. Jaisimha (74 and 101) at Brisbane in 1967-68 and Sachin Tendulkar (68 and 119 not out) at Manchester in 1990. Interestingly, no Indian has managed this in a home Test.

How many ducks does Virat Kohli have in Tests? How many as captain? I think he has two or three first-ball ducks in Tests. Could you kindly list all his golden ducks? – Ajay Jha, Patna.

Virat Kohli has nine Test ducks. His first came at Bridgetown in June 2011. He has five ducks as Test captain. The summary of his ducks are: four first-ball ducks, three two-ball ducks, one four-ball duck and one 11-ball duck.
