Senior Nationals: Maana breaks another record

Gujarat’s teenage swimming sensation, Maana Patel, broke her own 200m backstroke national record, set in 2013, to win the gold medal at the 69th Senior National Aquatics Championship in Rajkot. Manna timed 2:19.30, while second-placed Damini K Gowda of Karnataka clocked 2:25.33. The bronze medal went to Shreyanti Pan of Bengal (2:25.99).

In the men’s section Veerdhawal Khade from Maharashtra also set a national record in the 100m fly with a timing of 54.59, beating his own record set in 2012. The silver and the bronze medal went to Supriya Mondal and Sajan Prakash of Railways Sports Promotion Board (RSPB). Sajan won the gold medal in the 1500m freestyle to take his gold medal tally to four in the ongoing championship.

Shivani Kataria handed Haryana their first gold medal of the meet, when she won the women’s 200m freestyle, clocking a timing of 2:07.97. Monique Gandhi (2:09.04) of Maharashtra won the silver medal, while the bronze went to Malavika V (2:09.93) of Karnataka.

RSPB lead the medal tally with eight gold, six silver and two bronze medals. Maharashtra (6, 5, 5) and Karnataka (5, 4, 9) occupy the second and third spot at the end of the third day of the competition.
