Utkarsh Ghor of Maharashtra created two meet records on the opening day of the 34th Sub-junior National Aquatic Championship, which commenced at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex on Wednesday.
In the 50m backstroke event, Ghor improved his own record of 34.88 seconds set during heats in the morning, clocking 34.30 sec. His team-mate Rishabh Das claimed bronze, clocking 36.19 sec while S. Athouba Meitei of Manipur won silver with a time of 36.06 sec.
Ghor returned to the pool to claim the title of the 50m freestyle event, with a timing of 30.55 sec. Basit Ahmed of Assam (31.40 sec) won silver while S. Athouba Meitei of Manipur (32.30 sec) settled for the bronze.
Aanya Wala and Apeksha Fernandes won the first medals for the home state, claiming a silver and bronze in the 200m Freestyle Girls group III, clocking a time of 2 min:20.88 sec and 2 min:21.54sec. Shakthi Balakrishnan had a near perfect race to win the gold, clocking a time of 2 min:19.52 sec.
Meanwhile, the old rivalry between Mumbai duo Sanjiti Saha of Khar Gymkhana and Palak Dhami of Glenmark Aquatic Foundation was on display in the 100m buttlerfly event. Both the girls improved the National record, with Sanjiti winning gold with a record time of 1 minute 7.77 seconds. Palak claimed the silver (1:08.82) while Shakti Balakrishan won bronze (1:12.46).
