Telangana women made up for the early setback of their men in the senior National table tennis championship at the Kotla Vijay Bhaskara Reddy indoor stadium on Tuesday.
While the men lost their opening match 3-0 to West Bengal, the women’s squad comprising Nikhat Banu, Varuni Jaiswal, Sreeja Akula blanked Uttar Pradesh 3-0 and then subdued Gujarat 3-1 to seal a place in the pre-quarterfinals.
With the ball neither moving with the expected speed nor taking trajectory on predictable lines, Nikhat primed her match-play for the situation at hand rather than plan a strategy. Staying close to the table, playing long rallies and a percentage game without doing anything fancy seemed to be the best approach in the circumstances, said the Chennai-based Income Tax Inspector, who won all her games and with a measure of comfort.
