UTT: Falcons TTC sweeps awards after title victory

The Falcons rode on impressive performances from Wu Yang and Liam Pitchford to bag the inaugural UTT title, as the duo deservedly hogged the limelight in the awards function.

Wu Yang of Falcons TTC was adjudged the Most Valuable Player among the female paddlers besides being named the Ultimate One for scoring maximum number of points (456). England’s Liam Pitchford won the Most Valuable Player Male.
 

The 25-year-old Chinese defensive player stunned all and sundry at the NSCI indoor stadium with her control over the chop, winning a point against world number nine Han Ying following a tantalising 57-stroke rally across the table.

She used the angles and deception in her game to hand the German opponent her first defeat of the competition.
 

Earlier, Falcons TTC clinched  the inaugural  title beating Shaze Challengers 14-9, with Wu plotting her way to an enticing 11-10, 11-4, 11-8 victory, her second women’s singles win in the title clash. Six points from the Chinese tipped the scales in Falcons' favour.

Points galore

While Wu topped the tally with 456 points from 14 matches, she was closely followed by Han Ying (433 points/14 matches), Marcos Freitas (356/12), Kim Song I (331/11) and Andrej Gacina (311/11 ) in the first five players list overall, according to the UTT website.

Individual awards: MVP Male- Liam Pitchford (Rs 1 lakh). MVP Female- Wu Yang (Rs. 1 lakh). Ultimate One- Wu Yang- 456 points (Rs. 1.5 lakh). Falcons TTC got the champion’s purse of Rs 1 crore, out of a total prize money of Rs 3 crore.
