World Table Tennis: Sharath, Manika crash out

Indian challenge in the women's singles of the World individual table tennis championships ended here on Tuesday when Manika Batra and Sutirtha Mukherjee lost their second round matches.

India's No.1 paddler G. Sathiyan entered the men's singles third round with a 4-1 win over Cristian Pletea of Romania while his compatriot Sharath Kamal bowed out without much of a fight to Tomislav Pucar of Croatia, losing 4-1.

Qualifier Sutirtha Mukherjee, who had put it across World No. 58 Sabine Winter in the first round, went down fighting to Adriana Diaz of Puerto Rico, ranked 31 at 4-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-5, 11-3, 11-9 while Manika Batra lost to Szu-Yu Chen of Taipei, ranked 24 at 11-2, 11-8, 7-11, 11-7, 11-9.
