Last minute replacement Abhimanyu Vannem Reddy sprang a pleasant surprise as he clinched the French Open junior wildcard by beating Hikaru Shiraishi of Japan 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 in the final of the Rendezvous Roland Garros tournament in Paris on Saturday.
A runner-up in the Rendezvous Masters in Delhi to Siddhant Banthia, Abhimanyu got his chance as Banthia pulled out of the event owing to an injury.
Abhimanyu will get a wild card for the junior singles event of the French Open for winning the event featuring players from China, Korea, Japan, Brazil and U.S.
In the league phase, Abhimanyu had won both his matches to top the three-member group that fetched him a berth in the final. He had beaten Sheng Tang of China 6-2, 6-2 and followed that with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Minjeong Park of Korea.
The Japanese had beaten Joao Ferreira of Brazil 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 and Michael Heller of the U.S. 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 to top the other group.
In the girls event, however, Malikaa Marathe lost both her matches in the league, 1-6, 0-6 to Anri Nagata of Japan and 6-7, 5-7 to Nathalia
Wolf Gasparin of Brazil.
