Bopanna-Vasselin out of Madrid Open

Eighth seeds, Rohan Bopanna in partnership with Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France did not drop serve, but converted only one of 10 breakpoints, and paid for it with a 6-4, 6-7(4), 5-10 defeat at the hands of Raven Klaasen and Michael Venus in the doubles pre-quarterfinals of the ATP Masters tennis tournament in Madrid on Thursday.

Qualifier Sasi Kumar Mukund’s superb run came to an end as he was beaten in the quarterfinals by Cem Ilkel of Turkey in three sets. Mukund had beaten Sanjay Fayziev and followed that up with an impressive victory over the second seed Nikola Milejevic of Serbia.

Mukund collected 22 ATP points, including five for qualification, for winning five of his six matches, and $2,190.

In the $60,000 ITF women’s event in China, Ankita Raina and Karman Kaur Thandi made the singles quarterfinals and the doubles semifinals with their different partners.
