Andy Murray defeated Novak Djokovic on clay to win the Internazionali d'Italia on Sunday.

Andy Murray's first victory over Novak Djokovic on clay to win the Internazionali d'Italia has seen him climb back to second place in the ATP rankings.

A run to the Madrid Open final, where he lost to Djokovic, preceded Murray's triumph in Rome, and he will go to Roland Garros ranked second after moving above Roger Federer.

Djokovic remains World No. 1 despite his defeat, while Milos Raonic and Richard Gasquet are the only other climbers in the top 10 – the pair benefiting from David Ferrer's slump to 12th.

Ferrer was one of Lucas Pouille's two victims as the Frenchman marched to the semis in Rome, the 22-year-old's run seeing him climb 21 places to 31 – the highest of his career.

A strong performance in Rome has also helped Madison Keys climb seven places in the women's rankings, the American moving to 17th after getting to the final against world number one Serena Williams.

She ultimately lost that match but her run sees her break into the top 20, while Timea Bacsinszky reached a career-high ninth after making the last eight in the Italian capital.
