Delhi in semis of National inter-state women’s tennis

Delhi saw off the strong challenge from West Bengal for a 3-0 victory and qualified for the semifinals from group-A.

Delhi saw off the strong challenge from West Bengal for a 3-0 victory and qualified for the semifinals from group-A in the National inter-state women’s tennis tournament in Bhilai on Wednesday.

Rishika Sunkara gave a strong start for Delhi by beating Shivika Burman 6-3, 6-4 in the first singles. Prerna Bhambri then followed up with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Yubarani Banerjee. In the doubles, Shweta Rana and Avika Sagval beat Shivika Burman and Yubarani Banerjee 6-3, 6-1.

Delhi remained unbeaten in the league phase.

In the semifinals, Delhi will be challenged by Telangana. The other semifinal will feature title aspirant Maharashtra against Karnataka.

Even though the tournament would be played over the next three days, with the final scheduled on March 3, there will be no play on the day of Holi, prior to the final.

The men’s championship, hosted at the same venue last week, had featured quarterfinals in the knock-out phase.

In group-C, it was a thrilling affair as Telangana beat Madhya Pradesh 2-1 to make the semifinals. In the decisive doubles, Sravya Shivani and Sindhu Janagam beat Sara Yadav and Ganeshi Aniya 6-2, 1-6, 10-4. Sara Yadav had earlier blanked Moulika Ram in the second singles to keep Madhya Pradesh in the hunt, after Sravya Shivani had beaten Ganeshi Anya 6-1, 6-2.

Maharashtra continued to impress as Mihika Yadav, Snehal Mane and Dakshata Patel dropped ten games between them in taming Haryana 3-0.
