Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal could face off in a US Open semifinal after both men were placed in the same half of the draw for the final major of 2017.

Despite enjoying numerous iconic battles in grand slams during their illustrious careers, Federer and Nadal have never met at Flushing Meadows.

Yet a contest between the two in New York is now a distinct possibility following Friday's draw ceremony in Manhattan.

Nadal, the top seed this year, will begin his campaign against Dusan Lajovic of Serbia, while Federer - who won five successive US Open titles from 2004 to 2008 - faces an eye-catching tie with rising American star Frances Tiafoe.

In the other half of the draw, second seed Andy Murray also faces a home player first up in the form of Tennys Sandgren.

Alexander Zverev - the winner of two ATP Masters 1000 events in 2017 - and former US Open winner Marin Cilic are potential semi-final opponents for Murray, the 2012 US Open champion.

Nadal and Federer are in the same half as Dominic Thiem and Grigor Dimitrov, with the likes of Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka, Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori all missing the event through injury.

Those absentees - together with recent fitness troubles for the likes of Federer, Murray and Cilic - mean the men's draw appears wide open.
