French Open updates: Serena, Sharapova ease into Round 2

The live updates and scores of the men's singles, women's singles and doubles matches on day three at Roland Garros.

12.25 am: A big storm is brewing and play has been suspended for the day. We leave you with Jeremy Chardy leading 17th seed Tomas Berdych by two sets to nil. 7-6, 7-6, 1-1. The play will resume on Wednesday.

12.10 am: Phew! Two sets and two tie-breakers. What a game of tennis from Berdych and Chardy. The 17th seed, Berdych, is now on the back foot after losing the second set too, in a tie-breaker. He trails 6-7, 6-7 (8).

11.46 pm:Juan Martin del Potro advances into the second round after beating Nicolas Mahut 1-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.

11.30 pm: After losing the first set 6-7(5) 17th seed Tomas Berdych has taken a 3-2 lead against Jeremy Chardy in the second set and will be serving in the sixth game.

11.15 pm: Meanwhile, Nicolas Mahut and Juan Martin Del Potro are engaged in a slugfest. Mahut has won the first set 6-1 while del Potro wrapped the next two at 6-1, 6-2. An intense game going on between these two at the Suzanne-Lenglen Court.


9:50 pm: India's Rohan Bopanna and doubles partner Edouard Roger-Vasselin of Russia move into the second round with a 6-3, 6-1 win
over the American pair of Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe.

 

9:45 pm: Serena wards off two break points in the second set to avoid any anti-climax against Kristyna Pliskova. She wins 7-6, 6-4.

9:40 pm: Rohan Bopanna cruising in the first round of men's doubles. Partnering E. Roger-Vasselin, he leads 5-0 in the second set against the American pair of Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe.

Meanwhile, Kiki Bertens, the 18th seed, defeats Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 6-1 to move into the second round.

8:48 pm: Serena Williams wins the tiebreak 7-4 to take the first set 7-6.

8.45 pm: Meanwhile, on court 4, India's Rohan Bopanna and Edouard Roger-Vasselin are slugging it out against Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe in their first round match. They are at 1-1 after two games in the first set.

 

8:25 pm: Serena Williams leads 5-4 against Kristyna Pliskova in the first set.

8:10 om: Yuki Bhambri loses second set 4-6. Yuki broke Bemelmans twice, but the Belgian broke Yuki thrice to clinch the second set. 

 

7:53 pm: Sharapova is not giving up! She won the next four games and is now leading 4-3 against Dutchwoman Hogenkamp. The grunts and the strokes are in tandem now!

7:45pm: Meanwhile, another quick exchange of serves have happened in the match involving Yuki Bhambri.  After being 2-0 up, Yuki lost his subsequent service game, but then broke Bemelmans again. In short, Yuki leads the Belgian 3-2 in the second set and is a break up. 

 

7:32 pm: Sharapova is 3-0 down in the third set. The Russian will have to really dig deep to get out of the hole here!

7:30 pm: Yuki manages to break Bemelmans' first game in the second set, wins service game to take a 2-0 lead.

7:15 pm:  Yuki squanders a 40-0 lead and with it the set as well. Bemelmans pockets the first set 6-4.

7:13 pm: Hogenkamp takes the second set 6-4 against Sharapova. We now have a contest on our hands here!

7:10 pm: Yuki stages a comeback, trails 4-5.

7 pm: Bemelmans running away with this one, leads 5-2 against Yuki in the first set.

6:45 pm: Yuki unable to maintain any sort of momentum. Bemeblams stages a double break to surge to a 4-1 lead.

6:40 pm: Bemelmans stages a comeback, breaks Yuki and holds serve to lead 2-1.

6:38 pm: Nadal fights back to make it 3-3 in the third set.

6:30pm : John Isner makes it to the second round after registering a 6-3, 7-6, 7-6 win over Noah Rubin.

Meanwhile, Maria Sharapova takes the first set 6-1 against Richel Hogenkamp.

6:25pm: Yuki gets off to a fine start, breaks Bemelmans to take the first game.

6:20pm: India's sole represent in the main draw, Yuki Bhambri takes on Ruben Bemelmans on court 8 .

6:15 pm: Defending champ Rafael Nadal is back in court to complete his match against Simon Bolelli. Nadal holds a two set lead but trails 0-3 in the third.

 

6:10 pm: Pablo Cuevas knocks out Aljaz Bedene with a straight-sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory. Cuevas will face sixth seed Kevin Anderson in the second round.

 

6:05 pm: Third seed Garbine Muguruza downs Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-6, 6-2 to remain in the hunt for her third Grand Slam title. She takes on Fiona Ferro in the next round.

 

6 pm: Marin Cilic scripts a 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 win over James Duckworth to progress.
Kevin Anderson defeats Paolo Lorenzi 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the next round.

5:48 pm: Denis Shapovalov completes a comfortable win over John Millman. The last set was a one-sided affair, Millman managing to take only two games.

5:15 pm: Kevin Anderson comfortably took the first two sets against Paolo Lorenzi but seems in a spot of bother in the third. He trails 1-3 in the third set.

5:10 pm: Denis Shapovalov takes the second set to lead 7-5, 6-4 against John Millman.
Garbine Muguruza has taken the first set 7-6 against Svetlana Kuznetsova by winning the tie break 7-0! She now leads 1-0 in the second.

 

4:00 pm: Play has been stalled due to rain.

 

3.46 pm: Anderson takes the second set 6-2 and is one set away from a place in the round of 64.

3.10 pm: Cilic comfortably takes the first set 6-3. US Open finalist Kevin Anderson has also wrapped the first set in his first round match against Italian Paolo Lorenzi. He leads 6-1, 4-1.

2:55 pm: Day three at Roland Garros is underway. Marin Cilic is leading James Duckworth 4-1 in the first set, while women's third seed Garbine Muguruza is also in action, against Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Serena Williams is set to make her Grand Slam return on day three at the Roland Garros, taking on Kristyna Pliskova in her first-round match. Rafael Nadal will also resume his first-round match, which had to be suspended due to inclement weather on day two, against Simone Bolelli.

On day two, Stan Wawrinka lost to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the first round, while Frenchmen Richard Gasquet, Giles Simon, among others, progressed to round two. ( REPORT )
