He may have had to grapple with the disappointment of missing the Wimbledon qualification cut-off, but Davis Cupper Ramkumar Ramanathan turned that into Champagne time by beating No.68 Rogerio Dutra Silva of Brazil 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the Antalya Open € 497,255 ATP Tour event in Antalya, Turkey, on Monday.

Firing 12 aces and converting two of three breakpoints that he forced and saving the only breakpoint he faced, the 22-year-old Ramkumar was quite fluent in notching his best victory.

For his fine effort, Ramkumar was rewarded with a pre-quarterfinal against the world No.8, Dominic Thiem of Austria who has been beating the big boys Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in the clay season.

On the grass courts, Ramkumar had already given a hint of his brilliant form as he blanked the first round opponent in the qualifying draw, Andrey Yakovlev of Russia before dismissing Yannick Mertens of Belgium 6-3, 6-4 in the second and final round.

Together with the 12 points for qualification, Ramkumar has already assured himself of 32 ATP points.

There was more good news for the Indian camp, as Purav Raja and Divij Sharan warmed up with a 7-6(4), 6-2 victory in the doubles pre-quarterfinals against wild card entrants Tuna Altuna of Turkey and David Ferrer of Spain.

In the $15,000 ITF men’s Futures in Colombo, Abhinav Sanjeev Shanmugam and Suraj Prabodh progressed in the qualifying event, but the Asian junior champion Nitin Kumar Sinha was beaten 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(3) by Nino Portales of France.
