Ramkumar Ramanathan in pre-quarterfinals in Taipei

Davis Cupper Ramkumar Ramanathan beat Maximilian Neuchrist of Austria 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of the $150,000 Challenger tennis tournament in Chinese Taipei on Wednesday.

However the other Davis Cupper, Prajnesh Gunneswaran was beaten in three sets in the first round by Jurij Rodionov of Austria.

There was progress for the Indian players, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, Sriram Balaji and Vishnu Vardhan in doubles, even though Ramkumar in partnership with Vijay Sundar Prashanth lost in straight sets. Purav Raja in partnership with Rameez Junaid of Australia made the doubles quarterfinals in the Challenger in Italy.

Third seed Aryan Goveas bounced back from being down 1-4 in the third set tie-break to win six points in a row against qualifier Stefano Battaglino of Italy, and a berth in the pre-quarterfinals of the ITF men’s Futures in Cairo. Sowjanya Bavisetti made the singles quarterfinals and the doubles semifinals in the ITF women’s event in China.
