Ana Ivanovic has endured a disappointing 2016; she lies 63rd in the WTA rankings.

Ana Ivanovic has sparked speculation over her tennis future by revealing she will make an "important" announcement on Wednesday. The world number one eight and a half years ago following her French Open triumph, Ivanovic was ranked as high as fifth at the end of the 2014 season.

However, the Serbian endured a disappointing year in 2016, struggling for form and fitness, and now lies 63rd in the rankings having not played in a WTA Tour event since her first-round exit from the US Open in August.

In a post from her official Twitter account on Tuesday, Ivanovic wrote: "My dear fans & supporters. Pls [sic] tune in to my Facebook page tomorrow at 6pm UK time, where I'll be sharing something important with you live."

While Ivanovic's message lacked detail, it prompted rumours that the wife of Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger could be pregnant and set to announce a sabbatical, or about to retire.

Ivanovic insisted she had no plans to end her career following her loss to Denisa Allertova at Flushing Meadows, but stated: "I really feel like I have to reassess because I have been putting so many hours on court and in the gym in particular trying to get my body healthy. It's been very frustrating not getting anything in return."
