Dhruthi Venugopal lost her way after fighting to be on par with second seed Tereza Mihalikova of Slovakia and was beaten 7-6(2), 6-3 in the semifinals of the $15,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament at the Arera Club courts on Friday.

Dhruthi served big to bail herself out of trouble early on, but could not handle the first set tie-break with equal poise. She started the second set well, but the Slovak turned the match around with her fluent game.

The other Indian girl, Kanika Vaidya was beaten by Emily Webley-Smith in straight sets.

Kanika had the consolation of winning the doubles title with Rosaliie Van Der Hoek of the Netherlands, as Tejeza Mihalikova and Ana Veselinovic retired after three games.

It was the sixth doubles title for the 22-year-old Kanika, who had won all her earlier titles in Egypt.

The results:

Singles (semifinals): Emily Webley-Smith (GBR) bt Kanika Vaidya 6-3, 6-4; Tereza Mihalikova (Svk) bt Dhruthi Venugopal 7-6(2), 6-3.

Doubles (final): Rosalie Van Der Hoek (Ned) & Kanika Vaidya bt Tereza Mihalikova (Svk) & Ana Veselinovic (Mne) 1-2 (retired).
