Madison Keys lamented what she felt was an inconsistent display in her Australian Open quarter-final loss to Angelique Kerber.
Keys was crushed in just 51 minutes on Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday, suffering a 6-1 6-2 loss to the German two-time grand slam champion.
The American, who committed 25 unforced errors in her defeat, said she was well below her best.
"I think she played really well. I felt like I was trying different things but I wasn't playing very consistent," Keys told a news conference.
"I think in the first set I played really passive, and because of that I feel like I wasn't moving as well, wasn't accelerating.
"So I wasn't very happy with how I played, but still, I was fighting and trying to stay in the match. Sometimes you just don't play very well out there."
Keys is now 2-2 in major quarter-finals, having reached the decider at the US Open last year.
The 22-year-old said she was unable to find her rhythm against Kerber, who faces Simona Halep or Karolina Pliskova in the last four.
"I think it was just me trying to be consistent, and I just went very far the other direction instead of finding a middle ground of aggressive and consistent," Keys said.
"So I think I just was trying to make the ball, make the ball, and that's not my game.
"I think I was having a difficult time finding a rhythm in that and then I wasn't moving, so then when I tried to be more aggressive, I just felt like things weren't 100 per cent."
