Johanna Konta's hopes of claiming a first grass-court title were dashed by an admirable Donna Vekic fightback in the Aegon Open final.

Playing on home soil in Nottingham, world No. 8 Konta was on course to win the tournament without dropping a set as she comfortably moved ahead in Sunday's final.

However, after losing the first set convincingly, unseeded Croatian Vekic responded impressively to triumph 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 and secure her second WTA Tour crown.

Vekic had beaten the sixth and fifth seeds, Shelby Rogers and Lucie Safarova, on her way to the final, but it was still a shock to see the 20-year-old prevail against a player ranked 62 places above her.

It looked like Vekic may have blown her chance when she allowed Konta to get back on serve after initially forging ahead in the decider.

However, Konta was then broken again at 5-5 and her rival held her nerve to claim a shock victory.
