Top seed Petra Kvitova outclassed Johanna Larsson to reach the Luxembourg Open semifinals, but the in-form Caroline Wozniacki missed out due to illness on Thursday.
Kvitova has missed out on a place in the WTA Finals next week, but the two-time Wimbledon champion is on course to soften the blow by winning a second singles title of the year after easing past Larsson 6-2, 6-0.
The Czech needed only 54 minutes to move into the last four after making an uncertain start against the eighth seed from Sweden, with the first four games going against serve.
World No. 11 Kvitova grasped control after both players failed to hit the ground running, winning 11 games in a row to wrap up what was ultimately an emphatic victory.
Wozniacki won the Hong Kong Open last weekend after taking the Pan Pacific Open title last month, but a bout of gastrointestinal illness cut short her challenge at the CK Sports Center Kockelscheuer.
Monica Niculescu was gifted a walkover in the absence of second seed Wozniacki, winner of this tournament three years ago, and the Romanian will face Kiki Bertens at the semi-final stage.
Bertens, seeded three, breezed past Denisa Allertova, winning 6-0 6-4 in a contest that was also over in just 54 minutes.
Lauren Davis stands in the way of Kvitova and a place in the final after the American qualifier beat Andrea Petkovic 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.
