A buoyant Petra Kvitova said she had received "the greatest Christmas present I could have wished for", as she revealed she was now able to move the fingers on her left hand again after being injured in a knife attack.

And Kvitova appeared remarkably positive as she addressed a news conference on her exit from hospital on Friday, smiling and laughing on a regular basis while providing an update on her condition. Wearing a huge cast on her injured hand, Kvitova said: "I am happy to tell you that I am feeling well. The medical staff, police, my family and my team have all provided me with amazing support in this difficult situation. I want to thank each and every one of them.

"I have been overwhelmed by the flood of messages and love received from the tennis family, fans and public: thank you very much. I will use all my energy to focus on my recovery, and will do everything I can to return to the sport I love as soon as possible.

"Yesterday [Thursday] morning, during a session with the doctor, I was able to move the fingers on my left hand. This was the greatest Christmas present I could have wished for. I am now looking forward to spending time with my family and I ask for privacy and peace as I start my journey towards a return to the tennis court. 

"Thank you very much and Happy Christmas."
