Garbine Muguruza defeated Venus Williams in the 2017 final to win her first Wimbledon title and second Grand Slam.

What a day of tennis we've had. Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic got their Wimbledon campaigns off to a winning start while Maria Sharapova crashed out of the tournament, losing to fellow Russian Vitalia Diatchenko! Diatchenko came back from a set and 2-5 down to oust her experienced opponent.

01:37am: Diatchenko has beaten Sharapova 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. What a win for the Russian player; this after having lost the first set!!

12:46pm: The match between Sharapova and Diatchenko is going into the third set!

12:43pm: Ostapenko beats Dunne 6-3, 7-6 (5) !!

12:38pm: The Sharapova-Diatchenko match is also into a second-set tiebreak.

12:35am: The Ostapenko-Dunne match is into a second-set tiebreak.

12:27am: Ostapenko flubs her lines. It's five-all in the second set against Dunne.

As does Sharapova. It's back on serve in her second set.

Jack Sock blows at two sets lead. Matteo Berrettini is through with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 win over the 18th seed.

12:22am: Shapovalov wins the third set 7-5. He leads Chardy two sets to one.

On Court 12, Jack Sock is in serious trouble against Matteo Berrettini, who's serving for the match at 5-2 in the fifth set.

12:21am: Maria Sharapova serves for the match at 7-6, 5-3.

Ostapenko does so at 6-3, 5-4 in hers.

11:51pm: Novak Djokovic wins his first-round match against Tennys Sandgren 6-3, 6-1, 6-2.

MATCH REPORT: Djokovic untroubled on Wimbledon return

And Elise Mertens, the Belgian 15th seed, is also through with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Danielle Rose Collins.

The 22-year-old Mertens is having a breakout year. She reached her first Grand Slam semifinals in Australia in the first appearance in the tournament, then reached the fourth round at Roland Garros. Keep an eye out for the Belgian.

11:50pm: Djokovic is serving for the match against Sandgren.

11:47pm: Ostapenko takes the first set 6-3 against Dunne.

On Court 12, 18th seed Jack Sock has been taken into a fifth set by Matteo Berrettini.

11:44pm: Denis Shapovalov loses the second set 3-6. It's one set apiece against Jérémy Chardy.

11:40pm: Two Britons are playing their first round matches: Heather Watson takes on Kirsten Flipkens, and Katy Dunne is facing the imperious Jeļena Ostapenko. With England playing Colombia for a place in the World Cup quarterfinals and the English cricket team facing India in the first of three T20 Internationals , I wonder how much home support they're getting right now.

11:38pm: Sandgren does eventually trouble Djokovic. He breaks the former champion, but Djokovic still leads 3-1 in the third set.

11:36pm: Maria Sharapova wins the first set 7-3 in a tiebreak.

11:32pm: Novak Djokovic is now three games away from a straight-sets victory in the first round.

11:26pm: Maria Sharapova's match against Vitalia Diatchenko goes into a first-set tiebreak.

MATCH REPORT: Halep enjoys first win as Grand Slam champion

11:24pm: Tennys Sandgren is not troubling Novak Djokovic in the least. The former world No.1, seeded 12th here, leads 6-3, 6-1.

11:22pm: Another upset! Caroline Garcia this time.

The French sixth seed holds serve to make it 3-5 in the second set, but Belinda Bencic does the same to close out a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 win.

11:12pm: Naomi Osaka, seeded 18th, muscles past Monica Niculescu with a 6-4, 6-1 victory.

On Court 3, sixth seed Caroline Garcia is serving at 2-5 in the second set to stay in the match against Belinda Bencic.

MATCH REPORT: Roland Garros finalist Thiem retires in Wimbledon opener

11:05pm: Djokovic is up 3-0 in the second set.

10:55pm: Three-time champion Novak Djokovic wins the first set 6-3 against Tennys Sandgren.

Kumuri Nara is no match for the world No.1, who progresses with a 6-2, 6-4 win.

10:22pm: Marco Cecchinato is out in the first rou nd!

Alex de Minaur wins 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

The Italian, seeded 29th, is unable to repeat his heroics from the French Open, where he upset Novak Djokovic in the quarters never having won a Grand Slam main-draw match before the tournament.

10:18pm: Simona Halep wins the first set 6-2 against Kumuri Nara and immediately breaks her opponent to lead 1-0 in the second.

And Novak Djokovic begins his match against Tennys Sandgren on the No.1 Court.

MATCH REPORT: Nadal breezes through Wimbledon opener

9:56pm: Petra Kvitova is out!

The upset of the day! Aliaksandra Sasnovich knocks the 2011 and 2014 champion out in the first round with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 victory.

That's two of the favourites out in the first round, with Elina Svitolina losing on Monday night to Tatjana Maria.

Grand Slam consistency is completely absent from the women's game – unless your surname is Williams. Let's put that into perspective. Since Venus Williams won her first Wimbledon singles title in 2000, sister Serena and Kvitova were the only women to win more than once. Since then, in fact, only once has Wimbledon gone more than one year without the Williams surname on the Venus Rosewater Dish – when Kvitova won her second title in 2014 after Marion Bartoli had won the year before.

9:54pm: Can Petra Kvitova turn this around? Aliaksandra Sasnovich is serving for the match at 5-0 in the third set.

9:50pm: Dominic Thiem retires from his opening-round match!

The seventh seed was trailing Marcos Baghdatis 4-6, 5-7, 0-2.

9:35pm: World No.1 Simona Halep begins her first-round match against Kurumi Nara on Centre Court.

9:30pm: David Goffin is out! Matthew Ebden sends the 10th seed packing with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 win.

Dominic Thiem, the French Open runner-up, is in trouble, too. He's two sets down against 33-year-old Marcos Baghdatis, whose claim to fame is reaching the final of the Australian Open in 2006, where he lost of Roger Federer.

It's not looking good for Petra Kvitova either. The 2011 and 2014 champion is down a break in the deciding set.

MATCH REPORT: Zverev eases past injury-plagued Australian at Wimbledon

9:24pm: Petra Kvitova, the only multiple-time Wimbledon singles winner aside from the Williams sisters this century, is one set-all in her first-round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

9:20pm: Second seed and world No.1 Rafael Nadal is into the second round with a regulation 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 win over Dudi Sela.

Is this the year Nadal wins Wimbledon No.3? He's not made it past the fourth round since reaching the final in 2011.

9:14pm: Twenty-year-old American Frances Tiafoe is into the second round of Wimbledon for the second straight year with a 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-3 win over Fernando Verdasco, the 30th seed.

9:00pm: Rafael Nadal is cruising at 6-3, 6-3, 4-1 against Dudi Sela.

MATCH REPORT: Champ Muguruza through to second round

COMPLETED MATCHES (at 9:00pm IST)

8:33pm: For Rafael Nadal, who's seeded second despite being No.1 in the world, this is just a walk in the park. He leads Dudi Sela 6-3, 6-3.

8:25pm: Nick Kyrgios is through in four sets. He beats Denis Istomin 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (5-7), 6-3.

7:58pm: Nick Kyrgios has played three straight tiebreaks. He won the first two but has lost the third.

And Nadal breaks Sela in the first game of the second set after winning the first 6-3.

7:50pm: Fourth seed Alexander Zverev bagels James Duckworth in the third set to win 7-5, 6-2, 6-0.

Will the 21-year-old German go the distance this year? Zverev reached is first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the French Open – in his previous 11 appearances in Majors, he's never been past the fourth round, including at SW19 last year.

Eleventh seed Angelique Kerber, the 2016 Wimbledon runner-up, is also through with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Vera Zvonareva.

7:37pm: Fourteenth seed Diego Schwartzman is into the second round with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 win over Mirza Bašić.

6:24pm: Eighteen-year-old Claire Liu wins her first Grand Slam main-draw match! She's through with a 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3 victory over Ana Konjuh.

It's been a while since a teenager won a Grand Slam. Maria Sharapova was the last to win Wimbledon, upsetting Serena Williams in 2004 at the age of 17. Svetlana Kuznetsova won the US Open two months after that at 19. Jeļena Ostapenko came close though: she won the French Open last year two days after her 20th birthday. Among the men, the last was, of course, Rafael Nadal.

6:00pm: Fifth seed Juan Martín del Potro goes through to the second round with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Peter Gojowczyk.

5:59pm: Bernard Tomic is through with a 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) victory over Hubert Hurkacz.

5:58pm: Johanna Konta, the highest Brit in the women's draw, wins her first-round match 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) against Natalia Vikhlyantseva.

It's been a long time since a British player won the women's singles title at Wimbledon – 41 years, to be exact, since Virginia Wade won in 1977.

In 2013, Andy Murray broke the jinx on the men's side, which went back considerably longer – all the way to Fred Perry in 1936.

5:47pm: On Centre Court, defending champion Garbiñe Muguruza breaks Naomi Broady to go up 2-0 in the opening set.

Damir Džumhur, seeded 27th, wins 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 against Maximilian Marterer.

5:44pm: Journeyman Feliciano Lopez wins in straight sets – 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 – against Federico Delbonis.

5:42pm: Samantha Stosur wins her first-round match against Peng Shuai 6-4, 7-5, and 17th seed Ashleigh Barty is through with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Stefanie Vögele.

5:27pm: Claire Liu breaks Ana Konjuh to level the second set at five-all, after winning the first 6-2.

5:26pm: Del Potro is up 6-3, 6-4 against Gojowczyk, while the Nishikori-Harrison match is tied at a set apiece.

5:20pm: Daria Gavrilova, the 26th seed, is the first to go through to the second round on Tuesday, winning 6-2, 6-3 against Caroline Dolehide.

5:10pm: Tomic is up 6-4, 6-2 against Hurkacz.

4:46pm: Claire Liu, the 2017 junior singles champion and 2016 junior doubles winner at Wimbledon, wins her first set 6-2 against Ana Konjuh. The 18-year-old, ranked outside the top 200, is seeking a first Grand Slam main-draw win. She lost in the first round of the US Open last year in her first Major appearance.

4:44pm: Bernard Tomic, who needed a wildcard to play at Wimbledon after bombing his qualifiers, wins his opening set 6-4 over Hubert Hurkacz.

The Aussie, once ranked as high as 17 and touted as a future challenger to the Federers and Nadals of the world, is not really in anyone's good books. After qualifying for the French Open, he lost in the first round and then offered up a total of 64 words to 10 questions from the media in his post-match interview.

4:40pm: Nishikori wins the first set against Christian Harrison 6-2 on Court 14. On Court 7, Lopez wins the opener 6-3 against Federico Delbonis.

4:25pm: British hope Johanna Konta is in action on the No.2 Court. The 22nd seed is facing Natalia Vikhlyantseva of Russia.

4:16pm: And we have a new record today. Feliciano Lopez, ranked 70th in the world, is playing his 66th consecutive Grand Slam tournament. The 36-year-old, who's been ranked as high as 12th in the past, breaks Roger Federer's record, which he tied at Roland Garros a little over a month ago.

4:12pm: Juan Martín del Potro begins the proceedings on Court 3. The fifth seed is facing Peter Gojowczyk of Germany. Don't expect too many surprises here.

On Court 14, Kei Nishikori is playing qualifier Christian Harrison, whose elder brother Ryan, ranked 59 in the world, made it into the second round without much fuss on Day 1.

4:00pm: In action today will be Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem, Juan Martin del Potro, Nick Kyrgios, Garbiñe Muguruza, Simona Halep, Petra Kvitova, Maria Sharapova, Angelique Kerber... yes, a lot of big names on Day 2 .

3:56pm: On the men's side, Roger Federer, gunning for a record-extending ninth Wimbledon singles crown (which will place him equal with the great Martina Navratilova), had a fairly easy outing, overcoming Dušan Lajović 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 19 minutes.

Last year's losing finalist Marin Čilić, the third seed, didn't have to break a sweat in his 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Yoshihito Nishioka.

But the big surprise was Stan Wawrinka's win over sixth seed Grigor Dimitrov. The Swiss was down 0-5 in the first set, which he lost 1-6, but he went on to win the next three sets 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5). 6-4. Hats off to the former world No.3, who's languishing outside the top 200 after losing in the first round of the French Open.

3:48pm: Day 1 of the Championships saw not one but two big upsets. First, fourth seed Sloane Stephens, the French Open runner-up and the defending US Open champion, capitulated in a 1-6, 3-6 loss to Donna Vekić, and later in the day Elina Svitolina, seeded fifth and one of the favourites to win this year, looked all out of sorts as she lost to Tatjana Maria of Germany 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 1-6.

Serena Williams, seeded 25th, came though in straight sets against Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands, but she needed six match points to finish it off.
