Australia Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt says it is "highly doubtful" Bernard Tomic will be welcomed back to the team following his stint on reality TV show 'I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here'.

Prior to entering the African jungle with nine other famous faces, Tomic claimed Australia needed him if they were to stand a chance of winning a competition they have not triumphed in since 2003.

But Hewitt - part of the victorious side of 15 years ago - says the atmosphere in his team is as positive as it has been in a long time without Tomic, who quit the show after only three days to concentrate on his tennis.

The 25-year-old has been no stranger to controversy over the course of his career, most recently claiming he would "just count my millions" following his failure to qualify for the Australian Open, and has had previous run-ins with Tennis Australia.

Asked what the chances of a Tomic return to the Davis Cup team would be, Hewitt said: "It is highly doubtful.

"There's a lot more that plays out behind the scenes than what Bernie says publicly. For me, he's made some mistakes and it will be a long way back.

"With the team camaraderie we have at the moment, it's as good as I've been a part of in a long time. We fully believe with the players we have here, we can go a long way."

Nick Kyrgios, Jordan Thompson, John Millman, Alex De Minaur and John Peers make up the Australian squad to take on Germany this weekend.
