Garbine Muguruza..."Every year that goes through I'm more calm, less dramatic."

Garbine Muguruza is confident she can handle anything 2017 throws at her after struggling for consistency in the past 12 months. The Spaniard had a breakthrough year on the WTA Tour in 2016, as she >claimed her first Grand Slam with victory over Serena Williams at the French Open in June.

She failed to build on that success, though, and had a disappointing end to the year, with only one semifinal appearance in her last 10 tournaments. Jana Cepelova and Anastasija Sevastova ended her dreams at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open respectively, while eventual gold medal winner Monica Puig beat her in the last 16 at the Olympic Games.

The 23-year-old has put that dip in form behind her now and hopes to make a positive start to 2017 at the Brisbane International next week. "All I'm thinking now is about 2017," she told a media conference ahead of the season-opening tournament, where she will start against Australian Sam Stosur.

"There were some very good moments in 2016, very bad too. I think every year is like this. It's true that there was a lot of difference [in her performances] in 2016 but I don't want to think about that anymore. Every year that goes through I'm more calm, less dramatic. The feelings are not new anymore. When you're not playing well, when you're playing really good, you just know how to handle yourself a little bit more. I just want to go out there and see what happens. I have honestly no expectations because anything can happen. That's my mindset. Very simple."
