Kei Nishikori will return to the ATP Tour in New York brimming with confidence after winning the Tennis Championships of Dallas title on Saturday.

Nishikori was beaten by Dennis Novikov in Newport Beach last week in his first match back after a wrist injury, but there was no stopping him in Dallas.

The former world number four – who was absent six months – only dropped one set all week at the ATP Challenger event, the Japanese securing the tournament win with a comfortable 6-1 6-4 victory over Mackenzie McDonald.

Now Nishikori turns his attention to his return to the main tour with New York and Acapulco on his schedule this month.

"I played one of the best matches this week, every match I was improving," said the 28-year-old after ending his two-year wait for a title.

"I think I raised my level and finished really well.

"This week was a challenge for me, tennis-wise and for my wrist. My body was okay, it was good to have some tough matches and for sure it gives me a little confidence [heading to New York and Acapulco]."

The inaugural New York Open begins in Uniondale on February 12.
