Rafael Nadal has announced that he has withdrawn from next week's Rotterdam Open after being advised to rest by his doctors.
The Spaniard enjoyed a dream run to the Australian Open final last month, where he was beaten in a five-set epic by long-time rival Roger Federer.
However, Nadal endured an injury-hit 2016 season and ended his season early in October, in order to recover from a persistent wrist injury.
The World No. 6 has now confirmed that he will not take part in Rotterdam, as he seeks to recuperate fully following his exploits in Melbourne.
A post on his official Facebook account read: "I am very sorry to announce I won't be able to play in Rotterdam next week. After last year's absence from some tournaments, I started this season well and made a significant effort during the Australian swing."
"It's because of this that my doctors have strongly advised me to take it easy and give enough rest to my body before competing again to avoid further injuries. I fully understand that the Dutch fans will be disappointed."
Nadal's withdrawal marks a further blow for the tournament after World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka pulled out with a knee injury earlier this week.
Wawrinka, who has not played since a semifinal run in Melbourne, was due to be the top seed in Rotterdam.
