Ramkumar Ramanathan knocked out eighth seed Denis Kudla of the US 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the pre-quarterfinals on the grass courts in the $623,710 ATP tennis tournament in Newport, US.

In doubles, Leander Paes, returning to the professional circuit after the Davis Cup tie against China on April 7, renewed his winning ways with Jamie Cerretani of the US. The two had made the final of the Dubai ATP event  in March.

It was an admirable performance by the 45-year-old Leander, ranked 75 in the world in doubles, to be able to win in straight sets after such a long break owing to personal reasons.

Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan also had a winning start in partnership with Austin Krajicek of US. The two teams will meet in the quarterfinals.

In the $125,000 Astana Challenger, lucky-loser Arjun Kadhe went down fighting against Aleksandr Nedovyesov of Kazakhstan in three sets, but barged into the doubles semifinals in partnership with another Kazakh, Denis Yevseyev.

In the $25,000 ITF women’s event in Thailand, Rutuja Bhosale beat third seed Ankita Raina 6-4, 6-3 in the pre-quarterfinals. It was the second win in six meetings for the 22-year-old Rutuja over the 25-year-old Ankita, who had won the title last week at the same venue.

Rutuja had a memorable day as she won two matches in doubles as well, in partnership with Pranjala Yadlapalli, which included a 6-2, 6-3 drubbing of the top seeds Jia-Qi Kang of China and Penagtarn Plipuech of Thailand in the semifinals.
