Ramkumar Ramanathan slipped in the final of the USD 75,000 Challenger tennis tournament in Winnetka, beaten 7-6(1), 6-2 by Akira Santillan of the U.S. on Saturday.
The 22-year-old Ramkumar, ranked 184 collected 48 ATP points and USD 6,360. Satillan, the winner, collected 80 ATP points and USD 10,800.
Ramkumar was scheduled to rush to Newport, for the USD 600,345 ATP Tour event, the Hall of Fame Open, on grass. He will be the top seed in the qualifying event, and is scheduled to play wild card Christopher Eubanks of the U.S. in the first round on Sunday.
The Newport event will also feature Leander Paes as the third seed in doubles with Sam Groth of Australia, while Purav Raja and Divij Sharaj have been seeded fourth. Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan has also entered the event with Hugo Nys of France.
In the USD 125,000 Challenger in Astana, another member of the Indian Davis Cup team, Saketh Myneni qualified into the main draw with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Altug Celikbilek of Turkey in the third and final round.
In the USD 25,000 ITF women’s event final in China, Karman Kaur Thandi was beaten with surprising ease at 6-2, 6-1 by JIng-Jing Lu of China.
In another women’s circuit event in Egypt, Kanika Vaidya was quite impressive in executing a hat-trick of doubles titles over three weeks, as she in partnership with the former Asian junior champion Rutuja Bhosale beat Linda Prenkovic and Jelena Stojanovic in straight sets in the final. Kanika had won her earlier two titles with Russian partners.
