World number one Rafael Nadal has suffered a Grand Slam bagel only on three previous occasions

World number one and defending champion Rafael Nadal suffered a rare bagel in the quarterfinals of the US Open on Tuesday.

Top seed Nadal had only lost a set 6-0 at a Grand Slam on three previous occasions – the 2015 Australian Open, 2006 Wimbledon and the 2004 US Open.

But the 17-time major champion was completely dismantled in the opening set by the red-hot Dominic Thiem in New York, where the Austrian ninth seed annihilated Nadal in just 24 minutes.

Thiem is looking to reach the semifinals, having reached his first last-eight match outside of the French Open as Nadal seeks a fourth title at Flushing Meadows.
