Saketh Myneni moves into second round of Astana Challenger

The Indian defeated local wild card Grigoriy Lomakin of Kazakhstan 6-3, 7-6.

Qualifier Saketh Myneni continued to assert his versatile game as he beat local wild card Grigoriy Lomakin of Kazakhstan 6-3, 7-6(4) in the first round of the USD 125,000 Challenger in Astana on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old Saketh converted one of five breakpoints he forced and saved the only breakpoint he faced.

In the Hall of Fame Open ATP event on grass in Newport, top seed Ramkumar Ramanathan was beaten 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 in the second and final qualifying round by Matthew Ebden of Australia. He had to settle for six ATP points. Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan in partnership with Hugo Nys of France was beaten 10-3 in the super tie-break of the pre-quarterfinals by Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands and Artem Sitak of New Zealand.

Yuki Bhambri warmed up for the tougher challenges ahead with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Tatsuma Ito of Japan in the USD 75,000 Challenger in Canada. Sriram Balaji, however, went down in straight sets to qualifier Mariano Kestelbom of Argentina in the Challenger in Poland. In the USD 25,000 ITF women’s event in China, Karman Kaur Thandi had no answers to the fourth seed Wang Yafan, and managed to eke out four games from 23-year-old Chinese in the first round.

In the ITF women’s event in Egypt, Snehal Mane qualified into the main draw to join former Asian junior champion Rutuja Bhosale, while Dhruthi Venugopal alone progressed into the second round, among a bunch of Indian girls in Thailand, most of whom tried unsuccessfully to progress from the qualifying event.
