A defiant Serena Williams insists she is just getting started after falling short of a remarkable eighth Wimbledon title courtesy of a final defeat to Angelique Kerber.

Williams was bedridden for six weeks after suffering life-threatening complications following the birth of her first child just 10 months ago, but defied the odds to enjoy a dream run to another final at the All England Club.

However, Kerber put on a textbook display of defence and accuracy to nullify her opponent's power and secure a 6-3 6-3 triumph.

That meant Williams fell short in her bid to match Margaret Court's record of 24 grand slam singles crowns, but the veteran is adamant reaching the final is the beginning of her comeback not the end.

"It was such an amazing tournament for me. I was really happy to get this far," said Serena during an on-court interview with the BBC.

"It's obviously disappointing, but I cannot be disappointed, I have so much to look forward to and I am just getting started."

Williams dedicated her performance against Kerber, who is now a three-time grand slam champion, to mothers the world over.

"I am just me, and that's all I can be. To all the mums out there, I was playing for you and I tried but Angelique played really well, she played out of her mind," Williams added.

"I look forward to continuing to be out here and do what I do best."

On Kerber, Williams said: "She's an incredible person, a really good friend, so I am really happy for her. I know she's going to really enjoy it and enjoy the moment."
