The Swede produced a fantastic display to delight the home crowd in a surprisingly one-sided 6-2, 6-1 triumph.
He will now meet Ivo Karlovic, seeded third, in the next round, while Nicolas Almagro booked a second-round clash with either John Isner or Juan Martin del Potro by coming from a set down to defeat Yuichi Sugita 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3.
Portugal's Gastao Elias set up a second-round meeting with top seed Gael Monfils courtesy of a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ivan Dodig, while Dustin Brown beat Gilles Muller 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
