Former national champion V. M. Ranjeet teased and toyed with the talented Rishi Reddy for a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the first round of the Fenesta National tennis championship, at the DLTA Complex here on Tuesday. In a high-quality contest interspersed with fine rallies of athleticism and imaginative play, Ranjeet called the shots with his crisp and energetic game. He will play Sai Saran Reddy in the pre-quarterfinal.

Former national champion Vishnu Vardhan was sharp in dismissing Sivadeep Kosaraju for the loss of three games. He will play the young Paramveer Singh Bajwa, who battled his way past the fluent stroking and surprisingly agile, Rupesh Roy. Dalwinder Singh blanked the national junior champion B. R. Nikshep, after the latter stayed on course in the junior section, by reaching the third round as the top seed.

Another former national champion, second seed Mohit Mayur, fifth seed Kunal Anand, seventh seed Siddharth Vishwakarma and eighth seed Jayesh Pungliya made the second round. In the women’s section, rain played havoc, but gave respite to top seed Dhruthi Venugopal caught in a tricky duel against qualifier Mihika Yadav. Dhruthi led 7-6(3), 1-6, 5-4 when rain stopped play. Seventh seed Sowjanya Bavisetti was in a spot of bother as qualifier Vaidehi Chaudhari was 2-0 up in the third set.

Shweta Rana, energised with her employment with the Railways, was leading 5-0 against second seed Rishika Sunkara when rain brought the proceedings to an end. When play resumed two hours later after the courts were dried, another spell of rain closed the proceedings at night. Second seed Rishika Sunkara and former finalist Shweta Rana were locked in a tough battle. Nidhi was cruising at 6-1, 4-0 against Saumya Vig.

In the junior boys’ event, Oges Theyjo, brother of Mohit Mayur, made the third round as his opponent, sixth seed Abhimanyu Vannem Reddy retired with a bout of cramps in the third set.
