Christian Garin saved five match points as he stunned Jeremy Chardy en route to the quarterfinals of the US Men's Clay Court Championship.
Garin was down 3-5 in the third set and fended off four match points before saving another in the tie-break as the Chilean prevailed 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6).
Frenchman Chardy was wasteful in Houston, where he tallied 13 double faults in the three-hour marathon on Wednesday. Garin will face Henri Laaksonen in the quarters after the Swiss qualifier defeated Ryan Harrison 6-4, 7-5.
Marcel Granollers – the 2008 champion – advanced to his first quarterfinal since July after easing past Bernard Tomic 6-1, 6-2.
Granollers only needed 47 minutes to oust the Australian, converting all five break points he earned on the American clay midweek.
Casper Ruud – who shocked fourth seed Reilly Opelka 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 – awaits Granollers in the last eight of the ATP tournament.
