Stan Wawrinka completed a hat-trick of Chennai Open titles with a 6-3 7-5 win over 19-year-old Borna Coric. The Swiss ace went all the way without dropping a set throughout the tournament but acknowledged his Croatian opponent’s effort.
“I knew I had to concentrate on every point as it was the final match. It was a tough game against a tough opponent who was always fighting. But I stayed tough as well and I’m really happy with the way I won the match.”
The world number four has two Grand Slams under his belt and is looking to add to that tally this year. He has already added Magnus Norman to his coaching staff and feels minor changes in his game will take him to the next level. “I have been trying to improve my overall game; trying to move better, trying to play more aggressively, trying to have a better forehand, to serve better.”
With more than a decade of the ATP tour experience under his belt, Wawrinka knows exactly what is needed to win tournaments like the Chennai Open. “When I play any tournament, I take it match by match. It can be very difficult when you’re the top seed. I am happy with the way I played throughout the tournament. I got better and better with every match. I am happy to win this trophy again, it is a great feeling.”
“Stan the Man” will be hoping that win in the first tournament of the new season can provide him with the perfect platform to have a successful season. He said, “The crowd support was amazing like it is every year. It is another title for me in Chennai and it is a great feeling to be on these courts.”
He added, “It was great coming back here again. Chennai is a great place to play tennis. It is a great city to start the year. I enjoy the crowd, they have been nice to me since day one. Hopefully I will come back again next year.”
