Stan Wawrinka celebrates after beating Kei Nishikori.

Stan Wawrinka expects his US Open final with Novak Djokovic to be "something special".

The Swiss world number three recovered from a slow start to seal a 4-6 7-5 6-4 6-2 win over Kei Nishikori in Friday's semi-final at Flushing Meadows. He will now take on the world number one on Sunday in a repeat of the 2015 French Open final won by Wawrinka.

"I'm really excited," Wawrinka said. "I have watched the final so many times here and to play Novak Djokovic is going to be something special. Hopefully I will be ready and let's see what will happen."

On his performance against Nishikori, Wawrinka added: "It was tough conditions. I saw the first semi-final and it is really humid, really hot and I knew it would be really tough. Kei is a tough player and he played well from the beginning. I had to wait and fight and make him a bit uncomfortable and he started to get tired."

"That is when I put my game to be aggressive. To be in the final is something crazy."
