Gritty win for Konta

Johanna Konta defeated Donna Vekic in a humdinger of a battle at the Centre Court on Wednesday. She overcame the Croatian's challenge 7-6(4), 4-6, 10-8 in a match that went beyond three hours.

Azarenka shuts down last year's semifinalist

Victoria Azarenka stepped up her bid to become the first mother to win Wimbledon in 37 years as the former World No. 1 defeated Russian 15th seed Elena Vesnina on Wednesday. Azarenka cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the second round of her first Grand Slam since taking a year off to have her first child in December.

In just her second tournament following son Leo's birth, the 27-year-old Belarusian hopes to become the first mother to lift the Wimbledon women's singles trophy since Evonne Goolagong in 1980.

Cibulkova storms past Brady

Eighth seed Dominika Cibulkova hit 16 winners on her way to a 6-4, 6-4 victory over American Jennifer Brady.

Home favourite Watson cruises through to Round 3

Home favourite Heather Watson beat 18th seed Anastasija Sevastova 6-0, 6-4 to reach the third round at the championships for the third time. Watson was off to a flying start on Court Two, losing only eight points on her way to winning the opening set in just 19 minutes.

Maria Sakkari downs Krystina Pliskova

Greece's Maria Sakkari came back from a set down to reach the third round of the championships for the first time, beating Czech Kristyna Pliskova 6-7(6) 6-4 6-4 on Court 14.

Gilles Muller wins a marathon

Gilles Muller of Luxembourg slugged it out for five sets before emerging victorious in his second round match against Czech Republic's Lukas Rosol. He secured a thrilling 7-5, 6-7(7), 4-6, 6-3, 9-7 win.

Bautista Agut into Round 3

Roberto Bautista Agut defeated Peter Gojowczyk 6-2, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to be the first man into the third round. He will either face Kei Nishikori or Sergiy Stakohskiy in the next round.

Tsonga wins

Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga sailed into the third round with a 6-1, 7-5, 6-2 win over Simone Bolelli of Italy.

Nishikori beats Stakhovsky in four sets

Kei Nishikori dug deep to keep his challenge alive as the Japanese star ground out a 6-4, 6-7 (7/9), 6-1, 7-6 (8/6) win over Ukrainian qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky.

Despite reaching at least the quarterfinals of the other three Grand Slams, Nishikori has never been past the fourth round at Wimbledon.
