Caroline Wozniacki's emotions bubbled to the surface as she celebrated winning her maiden grand slam at the Australian Open, before sheepishly apologising to vanquished foe Simona Halep.

Wozniacki has twice lost US Open finals and was a beaten semi-finalist at Melbourne Park in 2009, with a 67-week reign at world number one not backed up by a major triumph prior to this week.

However, the Dane was victorious at last year's WTA Finals and has maintained momentum into 2018, beating Halep 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-4 on Rod Laver Arena to end her drought and reclaim top spot in the rankings.

The Dane came from a break down in the deciding set to become her nation's first grand-slam winner and the 27-year-old was naturally elated.

"I'm sorry I'm just taking a second here to hug Daphne," Wozniacki joked as she was applauded onto the stage clutching the Daphne Akhurst Trophy.

"I've dreamt of this moment for so many years, to be here it's a dream come true. My voice is shaking, I never cry but today is a very emotional moment.

"I want to congratulate Simona. I know that today is a tough day, I'm sorry that I had to win today!

"I'm sure we'll have many matches in the future. It was an incredible match, incredible fight and again I'm sorry!"

After many near-misses in the past, nerves understandably played a role on Saturday, but Wozniacki was thankful to overcome them.

"The fans have been incredible all week," she added. "To be here today and feel support makes this moment special, so thanks for coming out and supporting both of us, it's been an incredible two weeks.

"Last but not least, I want to thank my team. My dad - he's always been there from day one. You've coached me from the start, we've had ups and downs but you stood by my side so thank you.

"I want to thank my fiancée [former NBA star David Lee], who's here tonight. Without your support - I was a nervous wreck this morning, I wanted to win so badly but you calmed me down and helped me enjoy this moment so thank you so much for being here and having this special moment with me."
