Yuki Bhambri off to a good start in Taipei Challenger

The 104th ranked Yuki, seeded fourth, beat Roberto Ortega-Olmedo of Spain 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3 in two hours and 10 minutes, in the first round of the $150,000 Challenger tennis tournament in Taipei on Tuesday.

Yuki Bhambri returned to the professional circuit on a winning note, after skipping the Davis Cup tie against China.

The 104th ranked Yuki, seeded fourth, beat Roberto Ortega-Olmedo of Spain 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3 in two hours and 10 minutes, in the first round of the $150,000 Challenger tennis tournament in Chinese Taipei on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old Yuki dropped serve twice but converted five of eight break points to pull through. He was joined by fellow Davis Cup players Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni in the second round.

Sixth seed Ramkumar beat qualifier Thomas Fancutt 7-6(5), 6-7(0), 6-2. Fancutt had stopped Sasi Kumar Mukund in the third and final qualifying round.

Saketh beat the hero of the Davis Cup tie against China, left-hander Prajnesh Gunneswaran, who had won the fifth rubber against Yibing Wu with a rare touch of assurance. Saketh prevailed 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4.

In another Challenger in Italy, Davis Cup player Sumit Nagal did not capitalise on a good start and lost in three sets to Goncao Oliveira of Portugal.

In the $25,000 ITF women’s event in Japan, Ankita Raina sailed into the singles pre-quarterfinals but crashed out of the doubles in the first round in partnership with Chin-Wei Chan.

In the $15,000 women’s event in Egypt, Sai Samhitha and Nidhi Chilumula qualified and drew the top two seeds Tara Moore of Britain and Eleni Kordolaimi of Greece respectively, in the first round.

Rutuja Bhosale and Kanika Vaidya knocked out the second seeds in the doubles pre-quarterfinals.
