Junior Asian C'ship: Deepak wins gold in fruitful Indian campaign

Deepak won gold in the 84kg freestyle event in the Junior Asian Championship, as India finished with a rich haul of 12 medals in the tournament.

Deepak led the Indian medal charge, winning gold in the 84kg freestyle event, as the country's junior wrestlers ended their campaign at the 2016 Junior Asian Championships with a rich haul of one gold, seven silver and four bronze medals on Sunday, the last day of the competition.

According to the Wrestling Federation of India, the event, held from May 31 to June 5 in Manila, also saw the Indian men's freestyle team crowned champion for its haul of seven medals. The 23-member Indian contingent also saw three women among the medals – Sujata (44kg), Pinki (51kg), Pooja (72kg) all going down in the final.

The medalists:

Freestyle: Gold: Deepak (84kg); silver: Rahul (50kg), Vikas (66kg), Pritam (74kg); bronze: Naveen (55kg), Nasir (96kg), Somvir (120kg).

Greco-Roman: Silver: Ravi (96kg); bronze: Manish (69kg). Women: Silver: Sujata (44kg), Pinki (51kg), Pooja (72kg).
