Sandeep Tomar bags silver, Narsingh gets bronze in Spain

Wrestlers Sandeep Tomar and Narsingh Yadav bag medals in their respective categories at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Rio-bound Indian grapplers, Sandeep Tomar and Narsingh Yadav won the silver and bronze medals in 74kg and 57kg respectively at the Spanish Grand Prix Wrestling championship in Madrid today. Tomar, competing in the 57-kg category, lost to Mongolia's Erdenebat Bekhabayar 4-1 in the final. He reached the final after a commanding 10-0 win over Canada's Darthe Capellan.

Meanwhile, Narsingh downed Russia's Evgeny Lapshov 6-2 in the repechage of the 74-kg category to take third spot. In the quarterfinal, Narsingh slipped to a 7-4 loss to Cuba's Livan Lopez. However, Narsingh had a chance to redeem after Lopez reached the final.

In the 74kg category, Livan Lopez of Cuba and Zelimkhan Khadjiev of France won the gold and silver medals respectively, while Purevjav Unurbat of Mongolia also won the bronze apart from Narsingh. Narsingh beat Canada wrestler Jasmit Phulka 7-0 in first round and then lost to Livan Lopez in second round but then got a repechage when the Cuban reached the finals.

In 57kg category, Erdenebat Bekhbayar of Mongolia won the gold and Darthe Capellan of Canada and Levan Metreveli of Spain won the bronze medals. However, London Olympics bronze medallist Yogeshwar Dutt failed to impress and returned empty handed after losing 2-8 to Cuba’s Yowlys Bonne, who won the bronze medal, in the 65kg category.
