Alize Cornet has stormed to her fifth WTA singles title with a straight-set win over Eugenie Bouchard in the Hobart International final. Cornet was a class above throughout, the French seventh seed triumphing 6-1 6-2 on Saturday.

The world number 42 was always in control as she put her Canadian opponent to the sword in a dominant display, needing just over an hour to secure the win.

Cornet and Bouchard exchanged breaks in the first two games, but from there the former did not miss a beat, winning the next five straight games to close out the opening set in comprehensive fashion, and the second was a similar story. Bouchard broke Cornet in the opening game and held to go 2-0 up but was powerless to stop the Frenchwoman after that, losing six on the bounce and the final in the process.

Some sloppy serving from Bouchard did not help her cause as she produced five double faults and won just 48 per cent of her first serves. By contrast, Cornet won 62 per cent of points where she returned the first serve.

Cornet was ecstatic after winning her fifth title and said everything just went right for her on the day. "I was just very focused on what I had to do," said Cornet, who now turns her attention to the Australian Open, where she will face Bojana Jovanovski in the first round. "The wind didn't make it easy for us so I was just trying to do my best on the court and play point after point. I just got my nerves together. I just had to stay calm and focussed and I'm so happy to lift this trophy - it's only my fifth one which makes it really special."
